Baby Boy Hospital Door Hanger

I didn't make a door hanger with Arabella.  They're not something I dislike by any means, but I didn't want to spend the money to buy one or have the time (or money) to make one...and I wasn't really sure what I would have done with it when we got home.  So I just didn't worry about it.  And I was and still am really ok with that.

I wasn't really planning on getting one this time either.  But just for kicks, I Googled and Pinterested images and examples and came across this one:

I loved it!  There were several variations of it that were just as fun.  And the more I looked into it, I learned that the designer, Joley Bean Designs, is a little boutique in Farmerville (yes you read that correctly...)--a little town in Louisiana just north of Ruston where Louisiana Tech is located; my mom's family also lives up there and always has.  I had never heard of this little shop, but you can bet your buttons I'll be visiting it next time I'm up there!

Anyway, the more I looked at it and thought about it, the more confident I got that it was something I could make on my own.  So off to Michael's and Hobby Lobby I went (oh, sad day... :P)

I found the ribbon at Hobby Lobby (and of course bought it while their ribbon was half off).  Everything else came from Michael's (where I used some coupons and scored great deals too!).

These are the four colors of his nursery and I wanted to make sure they were all included in there.  These are the match ups I decided to do as far as layering the ribbon.

The paint was Martha Stewart's Satin acrylic paint.  It's thick and covered those little wooden pieces extremely easily.  The burlap canvas was a little trickier to paint on with it being so thick.

The "mint" color was also very blue once I got it painted.  So I had to go get some minty, lime green from Walmart to mix in with that and the yellow.  I got a lot closer to mint than before, but it's still pretty blue.  Oh well--that's what I get for picking a difficult color!

I put if off for a really long time because I was so nervous.  I am a crafter and I love making my own things...but painting, especially words, are not in my comfort zone.  I was so scared I was going to mess something up...

But I finally got up the courage and umph to tackle the beast a few nights ago.  So down I sat with my paint, brushes, glue guns, and all my supplies and bravely got to work.

{I may have burnt off three of my fingerprints using the stupid high temp glue gun with the ribbon.  Work place dangers.}

After many, many midnight texts with my bff (she or my childhood bff normally do the word painting business for me!), I finally bit the bullet, traced out his name, took a deep breath and painted it out.  I was even more nervous because I had glued the fleur de lis down first so that limited my spacing tremendously.  I solved that by making it look like it intersected the K.  Had I not done that, I feel his name would have been too small or too squishy or way uneven.  I also didn't leave any room to write his middle name this way, and I would have liked to included that.  Oh well.  Ya live, ya learn.

Next came the part I was even more nervous about--highlights.  I waited until the next night so that I was able to take some time away as well as let the navy get good and dry.  They are by NO means perfect nor up to the caliber that my girls are capable of, but for me, they're fantastic!  I like how much the name pops with those colors added in.

I also tried to paint a scripture reference in the center oval of the fleur de lis.  It looked absolutely horrible.  So I wiped it off as best I could and just painted the whole thing grey.  I'm actually really pleased that happened.  The black didn't look bad necessarily, but I wan't crazy about it up next to the navy.  And now, only his nursery colors are used instead of throwing in the random black. (the edges are still black since I painted it after it was glued, so you can really see the dimension...cool touch too)

And here's the final product!

I layered the ribbon (hot glue...low temp) and glued the wooden blocks onto them in the order I wanted them (the writing on those was done with paint pens...which will be coming to the hospital with us so my sister can write in his stats).  I trimmed and glued the ribbon (including the top one) to the wooden frame of the canvas.  Then I popped them with a staple gun to add some extra stability and support.

I am really pleased with how it turned out and am excited to get it hung on the hospital door in a couple of weeks!  It's different from the norm that people get in gift shops, and it's something that will look great in his room (especially since I can easily remove the stat ribbons when he gets older and it'll just be his name).

16 more days--woo hoo!

Shower Hostess Gift

I was a hostess for a shower about a year and a half ago, and the mother to be made all of us picture frames out of wooden plaques.  It is absolutely beautiful and I love it in my living room.  I also get a compliment on it almost any time someone comes to my house.

So when my favorite girls offered to host a shower for me this pregnancy, I knew I wanted to try to do something similar for them.

I found the plaques at Michael's.  They're a little smaller than what I have, but were also therefore cheaper.  And since this wasn't the only gift I wanted to give them, I opted for that (and a 4x6 still fit on it, so all was good).

I picked up some chalk paint (which I had never used before, but liked...next time I would also get the wax finish to "age" it a little bit) and some burlap ribbon from Michael's as well.  It was all coming together, but I wanted a little more flair.  The buttons came from Hobby Lobby and were just what I was looking for.  The little clips were also a Hobby Lobby find (I love the Spare Parts collection they carry!)

A little hot glue, so sand paper, and a super cute easel (also a Michael's find) made pretty fantastic holders for some pictures of my people!

I paired them with a Leaves candle from Bath and Body Works (my absolute favorite scent they carry and the very definition of Fall in my book).  Of course I used the mess out of some coupons since all of these stores offer great deals with them :)

I love to craft, I love to give gifts, and I love these four girls with every ounce I have.  They're my people and my life is so much better because I have them.  I hope they enjoyed their gifts as much as I did!

Crafting for my kiddos

I found these adorable shirts on Etsy quite a while back, and knew that when we had another kid, I would be getting some of them.

The more I looked at them, the more I knew how easy they would be to make.  So that was my project earlier this week.

I browsed through Hobby Lobby and JoAnn, trying to narrow down which fabrics to use that were fun, whose patterns would show up when a letter was cut out of it, that coordinated with each other...this was the hardest part.  There are SO many pretty fabrics out there, people!

*I also got the shirt and onesies from Hobby Lobby.  I love how thick they are; and for little girls, they have the capped sleeves and fitted waist instead of just normal t-shirts. *

Once I got them picked out, I had to choose which order they would go in to look the best...also not extremely easy, and this step had me second guessing some of my choices.

After that, assembly was all that was needed!  I used the Cricut (that I kidnapped from my mom and just won't give back :) to cut out the letters.  If you have good, creative handwriting, you could just freehand them; but I knew my letters would be all different sizes and all kinds of funky looking (in a bad way), so I opted to let the Cricut do the work there (I used the Lyrical Letters cartridge, Jumbo font).

*it's best to wash all of your fabric before using--no fabric softener*

Once those are all cut out, trim down your fabric and adhere some Heat n Bond to it.  Trace your letters that you cut out on there (make sure to place the letter backwards when you trace it so your letter and pattern are facing the correct way when they're cut out--remember you're tracing on the back).  After you trace, cut those out by hand (fabric scissors and mini paper snips work best--especially if your working with small or intricate letters or designs).  Peel off the paper backing, arrange your art work on the shirt or dress or whatever you're working on, and iron away!  If you have any letters with a dot, a button makes a fun touch too!

I used the sewable Heat n Bond because my mother in law is going to stitch around the edges to add a little  pop and definition.  It's not as sticky as the no sew kind, so be gentle even after they're stuck.

Only 3.5 more weeks until my sweet babies get to wear these at the hospital!  I'm loving them--and I love that I made them :)

She's so excited to be a big sister!  And she loved the shirts mama made for her and "Kappy-an" :)
(I had some Tech fabric, so I made those as well while I was at it!  I just have to get Arabella another shirt--but hers will look just like his but with an A)

I still have a few more projects to work on (and several I've already done)...hoping to get those shared here soon.  Apparently this pregnancy brought out the project crafter in me--which wasn't hidden that deeply to begin with :)

What have you been working on?  Or seen recently that you can't wait to create?

Take a look at the video below for a visual explanation of our new color families.
(it wouldn't let me embed it--click the link to view it on YouTube)

You'll notice that 9 of the "new" additions are actually returning "In Color" options so you may already have ink and accessories in those colors!

*Beginning today, all retiring/discontinued color products (ink, paper, ribbon, accessories, etc.) will be available only while supplies last.  This means that some products will not be available through the retired list period.

The new color families will be available in the new annual catalog which will be available to order from on May 31!

A Birthday WISH...in the form of a card

Eventually I will have time and inspiration to sit and create a ton of cards for birthdays, sympathy, thanks, congratulations, just because...  Then I'll have a slew of beauty to choose from when I need one.  A hand crafted wonder to hand out that bears my hard work.  And I won't be stressed because I don't have time to make it when I need it...

One day.  Eventually that'll happen.  Right?

Until then, I'll stick to doing my best to make them as I need them.  Most of the time this still leaves me either stressed and working late into the night, or sometimes sadly, resorting back to a store bought card...

I really wanted to make the cards for the birthday boys I mentioned in my last post.  First off, I had an idea in mind that wasn't too girly so I could actually make it work for men (making manly cards can be quite difficult...and sometimes a drag without all the frill we girls like).  Second, I love all three of those fellas and wanted to pour a little of myself into what would be their gift holder (I'm big on the giving of gift cards...).  Third, I found a dose of determination.

So here's what I came up with:

I love the subtle punch of fun that the chevron embossing adds.  Plus, how fun is that pun to spell the word "wish" using a candle?!  The Polka Dot Parade DSP gives a festive embellishment without seeming too girly; plus I chose the manlier colors of the pack to help that cause. I didn't have the Bigz alphabet die with me that night, so I had to improvise and use the Cricut.

I also love that using an embossing folder adds quick and easy embellishment to both sides of your card.  This gave me the opportunity to use some Stampin' Dimensionals to raise the birthday sentiment, keeping it simple with tone on tone paper (Whisper White) and a solid ink color (Real Red).

The numbers at the bottom make me grin... :)  The stamp is one piece, so I had to get creative one highlighting their ages (and I'm so glad their ages were numerical.  this wouldn't have worked so nicely had they been turning, for example, 52.)  I cut a post it note to the width of the two numbers I wanted red and covered them up before inking the Basic Black.  Once the stamp was covered nicely, I removed the post its and covered the 2 and the 5 with a Real Red Stampin' Write marker.  Just a fun little touch :)

*If this had been a kid's card--or if the numbers didn't work out to stamp their age--you could use this technique or multiple markers to jazz up the stamp and make it multi colored!*

Both sentiments inside the card are from the Patterned Party Stamp Set (#123065-W/#123067-C).

Simple Sunflower Card

I whipped this little pretty up in under five minutes tonight :)  It's a great card that would work well for multiple purposes since the sentiment is easily changed.  The Sunflower stamp makes a bold statement easily.

I used Early Espresso, So Saffron, and Very Vanilla as my color palette.  I wanted a little more detail on the front so I did a triple layer showing off all three colors.  The inside is layered with So Saffron only (Early Espresso as the base).

A little piece of baker's twine tied around it (tied all the way around the yellow/white pieces before mounted on the brown) added a little extra something.  I adhered it with glue dots (#103683).

I love running my envelopes through the Big Shot with an embossing folder to give them a little pizzazz!

Materials List:
  • Early Espresso Paper (#119686--8.5x11)
  • So Saffron Paper (#105118--8.5x11)
  • Very Vanilla Paper (#101650--8.5x11)
  • So Saffron Ink (#126957)
  • Early Espresso Ink (#126974)
  • Sunflower Stamp (#123606-W, #123608-C)
  • Word Play Stamp Set (#120308-W, #120651-C)
  • Early Espresso Baker's Twine (#123124)
